Course Description

A single panel can deliver a punchline, introduce a character or open a world. This course investigates how comics combine images and text to tell stories across genres, styles and cultures.

Move from thumbnail to finished page while experimenting with penciling, inking, lettering and layout. Study everything from superhero fiction to Sunday funnies, webtoons and Franco-Belgian comics. Weekly experiences cover design principles like hierarchy, composition and negative space to guide readers through each story.

Each project challenges you to think like a storyteller and work like an editor. Dig into local library collections or interview new friends in your community for inspiration. Guest speakers bring real-world perspectives on publishing, from print to web-based platforms. The result will be comics that reflect your style and influences, along with skills you can carry into storytelling, media or design careers.
