Course Description

The shape and form a book takes is just as important as the words, images, and ideas inside. Books produced in this course have unexpected elements such as hidden pockets or secret pages, or are the size of a postage stamp. Weekly lectures, research prompts, technical challenges, and assignments build skills and concepts culminating in a refined final book project.

This course will cover technical terms used in bookbinding as we dive into materials and discuss the best approach to brainstorming, planning, budgeting, and executing book-based projects. Traditional stitching and binding techniques, including hard cases, will be demonstrated as well as more playful forms such as instant books, accordion books, flag books, and flutter books.

Learner Outcomes

Following completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Demonstrate familiarity with bookbinding jargon, materials and techniques
  • Exhibit proficiency in crafting several book forms
  • Create a project plan and budget for book projects
