Course Description

In this course, artists will explore the fascinating history of the Japanese kimono and its dynamic revival in both Eastern and Western culture. Embedded in Japanese tradition, the kimono has been a fashion icon since the 8th century -- and still is today. Drawing inspiration from past and present designs, kids will create their own kimono story. Taking on the role of a designer, they will develop ideas with style boards, fashion drawings and miniature-scale kimono designs, and then complete their concepts by creating a full-size, personalized kimono to wear. In the process, they’ll learn simple pattern making, fabric handling and sewing skills.

Prerequisites

Students must be age 9–12 to participate.
