Course Description

Explore the fundamentals of landscape painting outdoors, or 'en plein air'. We will focus on setting the value key of our painting, on simplifying and abstracting the observed world, and on methodically developing color relationships to convey a sense of space. We will discuss the mechanics of traveling light and the importance of an adaptive painting practice, including the use of an array of working methods that may allow us to build a cohesive painting in the face of shimmering and fugitive atmospheric elements. This course will focus primarily on in-studio demonstrations to build foundational landscape painting skills and equipment preparation, and will close with one final outdoor project. Students are encouraged to venture outside to practice as often as they wish. Demonstrations will be done in oil paint, but students may use the medium with which they are most comfortable. All levels of painting experience are welcome.
