Course Description

RISD CE introductory architecture course

The notion of place is a core concept for designers. In this course, we build the idea of place by first understanding the historical meaning of being in a geographic location, exploring latitude and longitude, and how they affect choosing the right spot. Through a series of exercises, we analyze different terrain conditions, their cyclical yearly changes and relationship to unforeseen weather patterns, and how closely they relate to the selection of construction materials. Human interaction leaves a mark on the landscape, and we will explore layers of information, transit grids, transportation methods, frequency of use, etc. Toward the end of the course, we'll explore sustainability concepts and their impact on local sourcing of materials, access to local energy, place-as-home and the fulfillment of basic human needs.
