Course Description

RISD CE interior design course: the kitchen

A thoughtfully designed kitchen celebrates color, pattern, texture and functionality while providing the interior designer with endless possibilities for invention and reconfiguration. Students in this course will focus on the kitchen as they build a design brief that examines traffic and usage patterns, lighting requirements and solutions for ventilation and storage needs. Material science and product specifications, from fixtures and appliances to wall and floor coverings, are considered, along with economy, responsible use and manufacture and installation timelines. Design for the human factor, such as scale, ergonomics and psychology, informs the development of original ideas presented as drawings and physical models. By the end of the class, students will have a concept and presentation for a kitchen design and the project management tools to make it a reality.
