3085 - Self Portrait Photography

Course Description

Long before the mobile phone generation made the "selfie" a default form of photographic expression, '60s era photographers began using the self as autobiographical material or for the investigation of universal ideas. In the first class session we survey the varied approaches of work in this genre, from Francesca Woodman, Arno Minkinnen, Cindy Sherman and Nan Goldin (among others). Students then turn their cameras inward as they create their own self-portraits for homework. The class culminates in the second meeting with a peer review of images.
