Course Description

RISD CE black-and-white photography course

Black-and-white photography has been a mainstay of representation throughout the history of the medium, offering a wide range of personal interpretation of subject matter that is not possible within the faithfulness of representation that color often demands. This course acknowledges technological advances to a medium with origins in the silver printer's darkroom, as students learn how to use digital workflow to interpret a de-saturated world. Through lectures covering history, demonstrations in post-processing, and helpful critique, students gain insight and confidence in their own ability to see through the camera and produce compelling black-and-white images.
