Course Description

RISD CE course: Color in Photography

The use of color as an effective element within photographs has often been overlooked for the simple reason that color already exists in the world. As painters and illustrators already know, the effective use of color can greatly determine how a specific image can work to elicit responses both emotional and intellectual. This three-week shooting course explores the traditional use of color as an element, used by painters as diverse as Van Gogh, Gauguin and Rembrandt, early photographic practitioners such as Eliot Porter, Ernst Haas and William Eggleston, and modern day proponents like Mark Rothko, Alex Webb, Constantine Manos, Alec Soth and Patrick Zachmann. Students will explore their world with attention given to recognizing and utilizing colors that can shape their representation and interpretation of the world around them. Each week, the instructor will lead the class in helpful critique and in-class discussion.
