4059 - Principles of Aesthetics + Design in Photography
Course Description
Photography is an art form in which the compression of three-dimensional space into a two-dimensional picture plane happens quickly—and often without the intentional care of similar art forms like drawing and painting. The truth is, photography must also consider the rules of composition and their relationship to the elements and principles of design. An additional consideration is the aesthetic choice of color or monochrome and its role in the perception and interpretation of content. This course explores the underlying criteria that determine these aesthetic choices each photographer must make by examining the role of color, monochrome and the intentional design of their images. Using historical and contemporary samples to guide them in our own choices, students will create work while employing these important considerations separately and together, to make images that express their relationship to subject matter and the successful communication of their intentions. Weekly critiques and presentations add substance and points of discussion to assignments.
