4058 - Digital Fabrication Studio: Creating Embellishments
Course Description
For students interested in soft goods, textiles, fashion and fabrication, this course takes place at RISD's Co-Works Lab, and merges traditional hand processes with cutting-edge fabrication techniques to create embellishments and textile/soft good-related work. The class looks at digital and analog together as a working unit, and decides which tools are best for individual approaches. Class sessions incorporate demonstrations of both digital and analog tools and techniques, including laser cutting, machine sewing, hand embellishing and limited digital embroidery. Students take turns with the variety of resources, and ultimately combine processes to create unique embellishments or soft good pieces. An introduction to Illustrator allows students to create their designs for export and manufacture into tangible pieces. Toggling between the digital and analog options, this class is an excellent entry point to work with both, to experiment and to problem solve. Discussion focuses on how ornamentation and embellishment operate and how to harness the available tools to achieve desired results. This course is also an opportunity to enhance hand techniques.
