Course Description

RISD CE course: Surface Design Workshop

Surface design is the making, both manually and digitally, of repeating patterns and designs that can be used on a variety of products including home decor, apparel and textiles, stationery and fabrics. Here is a chance to gain hands-on experience with development of individual designs, as well as an overview of the industry. On the first day, you'll learn the design principles of surface design, and develop your own imagery with the help of visual prompts and exercises. Once you decide on your designs, you'll experiment with the essentials of pattern and repeat, the classic structure for creating patterns. Day two focuses on working digitally with a quick introduction to scanning, and a brief overview of manipulating patterns in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. The class concludes with a discussion of the surface design marketplace, and an explanation of licensing -- what the industry is looking for, how to sell your designs and what aspect of this broad field best suits your designs.
