Course Description

Relief printmaking is a subtractive process where one carves away from a “block,” and the areas that remain in relief are then inked to create a new image. This hands-on studio course focuses on contemporary relief printmaking techniques and encourages creative experimentation. With a focus on linoleum block printing, you will learn to carve printable matrices using multiple materials. Exploration beyond traditional methods is encouraged through processes such as vegetable carving, layered printing, and inventive mark-making strategies. Through demonstrations and guided assignments, you will develop confidence in carving, inking, and printing while building a solid technical foundation. Experiment with different papers, inks, and formats, learning how material choices influence both image and concept. Regular group critiques and discussions will provide a supportive environment for developing ideas, refining prints, and connecting processes with personal artistic direction.
