Course Description

RISD CE course: Sewing 101

This more extended and in-depth sewing course than Sewing: Introduction familiarizes students with their sewing machine while providing instruction in basic sewing skills. The class reviews sewing kit equipment, needle position, stitch types, the impact of fabric types and qualities, as well as how to avoid bunching and jamming. In addition to learning basic stitches each week for a sample sewing notebook, students practice basic sewing procedures by creating three small simple items such as a pillow, an apron and a tote bag. Students then advance to three larger clothing projects, such as a pair of pull-on pants/short/skirt, a simple shirt or blouse, and a garment with a zipper. This is followed by a group discussion and critique of the work. Note: Students must bring their own sewing machine and sewing/accessories kit to class. Please note that in addition to the lab fee, you can expect to have to buy additional supplies for this course. We try to keep this cost under $100, but for specialized courses (jewelry, wood, metals) this may be higher.
