Course Description

When the camera is turned on oneself, self-consciousness, vulnerability, and questions of identity and performance come into play. An artist can choose what they want to unveil or reveal, while fleeting expressions, lighting conditions, and environments can alter the viewer’s perception of the portrait.. While examining and taking inspiration from the work of photographers who have treated the self portrait genre in vastly different ways, you’ll explore different ways of—and reasons for—placing yourself in the photographic frame. Technical aspects and challenges of taking self-portraits will be discussed, as well as aesthetic considerations.
